The Overwhelming Reality of HR: How the Right Benefits Broker Can Ease the Burden
March 11, 2025At Michigan Planners, we’ve seen a growing number of employees and families confused by their medical bills, and for good reason. Today’s bills can be tough to read with vague descriptions, missing itemization, and little clarity on what insurance actually paid. That confusion can lead to overcharges, billing errors, and unnecessary stress.
Why It Matters
Understanding your medical bill isn’t just about peace of mind but how it can also save you money. Many statements contain mistakes or inflated charges. Taking the time to review and compare your documents could help you catch errors before you pay.
What to Review
When a medical bill arrives, you’ll want to compare three key documents:
- Summary of services
This is usually given to you at your appointment and shows what was done. - The bill from your provider
This includes the charges for each service, though it may not be itemized unless you request it. - Your Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
This comes from your insurance company and explains what was covered, what was paid, and what you may owe.
Go through each one and flag anything you don’t recognize, don’t remember receiving, or think looks off.
Watch for Common Billing Issues
Common mistakes to look for include extra zeroes (like 10 X-rays instead of 1), duplicate charges, or services and medications you don’t believe you received. If something doesn’t look right, contact the billing department and ask for clarification. You have the right to request an itemized bill.
Be Proactive
You can also take steps before a procedure or appointment to help prevent confusion. Ask how your visit will be coded, take notes during your appointment, or bring someone with you if you’re unable. Calling ahead to ask about items you can bring from home can also help avoid being charged for basic supplies.
